A Large rock where a king built his palace amidst a fortress, now in ruins, it is one of the exciting destinations you would want to visit when in Sri Lanka. The legend is interesting and fascinating, so drop in to the Sigiriya Museum which is now open to the public. Sigiriya is declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World. Indeed a wonder built out of imagination and fear, the sight is truly awe-inspiring. Ruled under King Kashyapa for eleven years, the cruel battle with this brother ended his reign in Sigiriya. Symmetrically built, sophisticated underground water system, the landscape is flawless and truly stunning. It is regarded as some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world, the sight will definitely awe-struck you.

Water gardens, boulder gardens, terrace gardens and octagonal pond are the other marvels in the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Standing near the gardens, the view of the Sigiriya Rock offers a majestic appearance.

The mirror wall adds another amazing feature to the Sigiriya. What’s more amazing is the mirror wall which was once so polished that the King could see himself. Banned from flash photography, it’s a sight that captivates any visitor especially scholars and those who loves art and culture. The other remarkable feature in the mirror wall is the verses that date back to 8th century.

Entrance to the palace is through a lion mouth with the paws aside. Though the lion’s mouth is not in vicinity, the paws are in existence.

The remains from the gigantic lion built from bricks are truly striking.

There is a series of staircase that leads from the lion mouth which will take you through a journey of galleries of paintings and verses. The ancient paintings or frescos are mesmerizing. Also known as the ‘Sigiri Damsels’, for there were around 500 pictures of women. You are fortunate to have seen the remaining 22 which are in good state.

Applaud and praise yourself, if you’ve reach the summit of rock. It’s a long way to go and worth every sweat and second of it. Once a royal palace is now in ruins, yet the layout and the design are still in vicinity which offers some spectacular sights. Gales hit hard against you so hold on to something strong and don’t miss the chance to capture some awesome photographs.

Sigiriya was once a kingdom of the King Kashyapa, then a monastery for successful meditation for the peaceful ambiance. Visit the Sigiriya Museum to find out the history behind the name ‘Sigiriya’.
