A Message From The California Yachting Association

ddayen asked:

The California Yachting Association wants you to thank Republicans in the Golden State for protecting loopholes that keep yacht owners from having to pay sales tax on their boats. Their priorities are clear: yacht owners, yes; children, the sick and the elderly, no.

  1. NH does not have sales tax.

  2. By the way, you were correct in that I mistakenly described it as adding a tax. My apoligies… :-)

  3. The truth is, my position is to tax the minimal amount that allows our government to survive. What I was responding to, was the notion that only the rich will be taxed. Historically, most of the tax burden has been carried by the middle class, because that’s where the most money lies.

  4. Unbelievable how unclear you are on the concept. Nobody’s adding a tax to anything. This is about a loophole that allows the wealthy to avoid sales tax. Now if you want to be intellectually consistent, oppose sales taxes. But if you don’t, then divying up which sales taxes should be paid and which shouldn’t is a ridiculous position. You’re arguing for yourself to be allowed to evade taxes. Which is fine, but they also put people in prison for the same…

  5. Remember, the power to tax is the power to destroy. Great. We add a tax to yachting. Know what happens? The rich guys go ahead and pay it (they can afford it) and little guys like me that gave their last dollar to have a small boat can no longer afford even that modest escape…

  6. Wrong! Look at Rhode Island. 1990s. At that time a luxury tax was added to all marine items that cost over six figures. What it actually did was not what the legislators expected. It encouraged people to stop buying boats that cost more than six figures. Boat sales dropped by 77% when the tax was imposed and tax revenue dropped by $97 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

  7. Somebody needs to take economics 101. Possibly one of the lamest videos on youtube.
It doesn’t matter how much money is generated for politicians in California, the Democratically controlled house will squander it all like them have done for years. The politicians don’t understand the word “budget”, just more more more…

  8. Where do you get “Hate America” from? I probably pay more taxes than you and I work full time. Excessive taxation is not the American way unless you like Socialism. So i should pay taxes on my earnings and then another tax on what i buy and oh, a luxury tax because I decide to work hard and not live off welfare…The state’s revenue problem is due to inefficiency and poor management.

  9. This is SALES tax, which is required in every other state. Previous repeals of this tax have led to NO MATERIAL CHANGE in the sales or amount of yachts in California, which is, not sure if you know this, on the coast. The state has a structural revenue problems. Stop driving on our roads and using our post office if you hate America so much not to want to pay for it.

  10. Ok lets tax them…so they go to another state to buy their yacht. Now CA gets no taxes and all the workers who make a living in the boat industry get no paycheck. Why do you think so many businesses leave CA? MOre taxes IS NOT THE ANSWER! The state has to live within their means…

  11. Another fine step in our march to a Dickensian utopia.

  12. Yeah! No taxes for yachts! Toss the yachts into the bay! Oh, um…

  13. Thanks for your help drawing attention to a cloaking device…
